Greece: A New Era for Digital Nomads

The way we work has evolved, with remote work becoming the cornerstone of modern professional life. In response to this global shift, Greece has embraced the trend with its Digital Nomad Visa, an initiative designed to attract remote professionals to live and work in one of the world’s most stunning destinations. With the recent enactment of Law 5038/2023, Greece has streamlined its framework for digital nomads, making it easier than ever to relocate to the birthplace of democracy while enjoying its unmatched lifestyle and culture.

Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa: A Snapshot

Greece has firmly positioned itself as a leading destination for digital nomads. According to updated data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 2023 saw a record 1,200 applications for digital nomad visas and residence permits. Since the introduction of the program, 1,340 permits have been issued, with significant representation from countries such as the USA, Canada, China, and Israel. This upward trend underscores Greece’s growing appeal as a hub for global talent.

The Digital Nomad Visa Under Law 5038/2023

Under the provisions of the new law, the Digital Nomad Visa falls within Category “I.8 – Independent Economic Activity”, specifically tailored for individuals who work remotely for foreign employers or clients. This visa type is distinct in that:

  • It prohibits employment or professional engagement with any Greek entity.
  • It provides residency rights to remote professionals while maintaining their employment or client relationships outside Greece.

The reclassification of this visa type ensures clarity and aligns Greece’s framework with EU immigration standards, making it more accessible and streamlined for digital nomads globally.

Who Qualifies?

The Digital Nomad Visa is available to non-EU nationals who:

  1. Are dependent employees or self-employed individuals working remotely for companies or clients located outside of Greece.
  2. Can prove a stable income of at least €3,500 per month, which increases by: 20% for a spouse. 15% per dependent child.

With these qualifications, remote professionals can join the growing community of digital nomads enjoying Greece’s work-life balance.

Application Process: Simplified Under Law 5038/2023

The application process for the Digital Nomad Visa has been further streamlined under the new legislation, ensuring faster processing and clear guidelines.

Step-by-Step Requirements:

  1. Valid Passport: Ensure at least six months of validity beyond the intended stay.
  2. Entry Visa: Either a Type D national visa or a tourist visa for preliminary entry.
  3. Proof of Employment: Provide an employment contract or a declaration of self-employment.
  4. Income Evidence: Bank statements, pay slips, or tax declarations showing the required monthly income.
  5. Insurance Policy: A private health insurance policy covering Greece.
  6. Accommodation Proof: A residential lease agreement or property ownership documents.
  7. Responsible Declaration: Confirm that work will not involve any Greek employer or client.
  8. Application Fee: Pay the required fee of approximately €75–100, depending on processing speed.

Translations: All documents not in Greek must be officially translated and certified.

Residence Permit Option

If your work requires a longer stay, Greece offers a Digital Nomad Residence Permit, valid for up to two years and renewable. Since its introduction, the Ministry has noted a surge in applications for residence permits, which represent 70% of all digital nomad-related approvals in 2023.

To qualify:

  • Applicants must provide updated proof of income and accommodation.
  • Biometric data must be submitted in Greece as part of the process.

Challenges and Improvements

Although Greece ranks 32nd globally in the Global Remote Work Index, digital nomads have highlighted areas for improvement, including:

  • Administrative Delays: While Law 5038/2023 introduces measures to address backlogs, pending applications remain a challenge.
  • Infrastructure: Reliable internet and co-working spaces are growing but need further investment, particularly in rural areas.
  • Taxation Clarity: Digital nomads often seek clearer guidelines on their tax obligations under Greece’s framework for remote workers.

Digital Nomad Families

Family members of digital nomads can also enjoy Greece’s incredible lifestyle. While they are eligible for dependent visas, these do not allow them to engage in employment or professional activities. Family members benefit from the same validity periods as the main applicant, ensuring seamless residency for the entire household.

Greece: Your Ideal Digital Nomad Destination

Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa continues to empower remote professionals, enabling them to live and work in a country that offers unparalleled opportunities for exploration, inspiration, and growth. Despite some challenges, Greece is rapidly becoming a leading destination for global digital nomads, thanks to its forward-thinking policies, world-class lifestyle, and welcoming environment.
